Tell us about yourself!
I have been a resident of the Lake country area since I was 12 years old and a member of the Oconomowoc district for the last 19 years. I am married to my wife Jackie and we have 2 daughters Payton (7) and Reagan (6). Both our kids attend Meadow View Elementary School. Professionally, I am a Technology Systems Designer and Project Manager for Staff Electric.
Are you currently, or have you ever been a teacher or administrator for any school district?
Have you attended any school board meetings over the last year?
Why are you running for the school board?
I began running for the school board in 2016 to bring a voice for the silent majority of our community on to the school board.
What skills and experiences do you have that will prepare you to be a board member?
Since being elected in spring 2018, I was elected School District Clerk in 2019 and 2020. I have served on the Finance Operations and Advancement Committee for 3 years. 1 year as FOA Committee Member and 2 years as FOA Committee Chairperson. I have served on The District Strategic Planning Committee, The Athletic Strategic Planning Committee, The Superintendent Evaluation Design Committee, The School Board Self-Evaluation Design Committee, The OEA - District Collective Bargaining Committee in 2019 & 2020, and I have attended enough governance workshops to choke a horse.
What differentiates you from other candidates running for the board?
I bring a perspective to the school board that is unique. I did not go to 4 year college. I went to WCTC and earned an Associates degree in Sales and Marketing. I began working in the technology field and secured my BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer accreditation. My sales and technical skills serve me well. This all points to my example to the students of today that there are multiple pathways to success and not all of them require crippling debt.
Did you support the recent recall efforts?
If you answered yes, what actions did you take?
What is your vision for education in this community?
My vision is a school district that partners with the parents to turn out the very best version of these kids they can be. It is not all about achievement (test scores) Growth (the measure of aptitude) might be more important when trying to maximize potential of all learners. The district can't do it alone. I believe the district should take the lead on the academic skills and the parents provide an assist. I believe the parents should take the lead on morals and character development and I believe the district should provide an assist in that development.
What issues do you believe our district needs to address? What are your recommendations?
I believe we need to dedicate our selves to the initiatives directed by the 2020 Strategic Plan. We need to excel in literacy and math before we add charter schools or alternative learning projects as discussed with the old Meadow View.
How does a school board balance the need to provide quality education with the need to respond to the taxpayer burden?
The school board needs to communicate the fiscal priorities of the community using "fence posts" to ensure the district is meeting the key performance indicators of the strategic plan cost effectively.
How do you feel about the common core curriculum, what are its advantages/disadvantages?
Common core is a set of standards to ensure all students have a minimum level of competency. The modern curriculum taught in schools has its pros and cons. The goal, is to teach the skill multiple ways to see if they can find a method that works for each child. Where these practices seem to fail is when a methodology is required and the student (and their parent) are confused and lost and the grade suffers.
What is the best way to address differences of opinion among board members?
Each board member needs to speak their mind and listen to each other. At the end of the day, we are each 1/7 th of a decision. Speak, listen and vote. Only abstain from voting when there is a conflict of interest either real or perceived.
How will you communicate with and be accessible to the community you represent?
I use Facebook and my district email address.
